The Diamond League is one of the most prestigious athletics competitions in the world, held annually. It has been organized since 2010, replacing the Golden League competition previously held (since 1998). The Diamond League consists of 14 myths, held in 32 competitions. To date, the competition has been held in China, the United States, the Middle East and Europe. Since 2022, the series has also been held in Poland, and the Silesia Memorial of Kamila Skolimowska is the first-ever Polish myths belonging to the Diamond League.
From the history of the Diamond League – Golden League
The Diamond League replaced the Golden League, which existed from 1998 to 2009. It was also a series of athletics competitions, consisting of six or seven myths, held in various cities in Europe. As with the Diamond League, the goal of the Golden League was to create an event of high sporting quality and to attract as many athletics enthusiasts as possible. Cities such as Oslo, Rome, Zurich, Brussels, Paris, Berlin and Monaco participated in the series of athletics myths. As with the Diamond League, the Golden League featured the world’s best athletes. Points were awarded for the places taken by athletes in each competition, while at the end of the season the best received financial prizes.
In 2009, the last cycle of the Golden League was held, only to be replaced the following year by the Diamond League mythology.
Diamond League – prestigious athletics meeting
What is the Diamond League? The Diamond League is a series of international athletics meetings organized since 2010. The purpose of establishing the Diamond League was to create a series of meetings where the world’s best athletes would compete against each other throughout the season. In effect, it was to contribute to the development and promotion of athletics around the world.
Diamond League classification is conducted in the following competitions:
- 100 meters
- 200 metres
- 400 metres
- 800 metres
- 1500 metres
- 3000/5000 metres
- 3000 metres with hurdles
- 100/110 metres over hurdles
- 400 metres over hurdles
- high jump
- pole vault
- long jump
- triple jump
- ball push
- discus throw
- javelin throw
Other competitions, such as the hammer throw at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial and the 4 x 100-meter relay in Zurich, are also held at some of the myths.
In each of the Diamond League myths, points are awarded to the best athletes in each competition. At the end of the season, a final is held, in which only the best athletes compete. The winners receive financial prizes, and a world record award and a Diamond Statue are also given.

The Diamond League attracts a huge crowd of athletics fans every year, while the best athletes are rewarded for their achievements throughout the season. The League is the most important athletics competition series in the world and is a great opportunity for athletes to gain recognition and increase their chances of winning an Olympic medal or a world championship.
The event also aims to increase interest in athletics among spectators, media and sponsors. More investors translate into more funding for the development of the sport. As a result, Diamond League organizers are able to provide better financial rewards for athletes, which provides motivation to work harder and raise their level of sportsmanship.

Diamond League at the Silesian Stadium in Chorzow
In Poland, the first Diamond League competition was held on August 6, 2022 at the Silesian Stadium. It was a huge success, and at that time world stars such as Armand Duplantis, Pawel Fajdek, Femke Bol, Natalia Kaczmarek and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce participated in the sports competition. The high organizational level of the event was appreciated – the special scoring system of World Athletics showed that the event became the sixth best myths in the world. Thanks to the professional organization, the Silesia Kamila Skolimowska Memorial was permanently included in the Diamond League calendar. The Diamond League in Poland is the first in the Polish history of a mythionship of this rank – only the Olympic Games and the World Championships are higher.
Countries whose representatives have most often won Diamond League competitions include the USA, Kenya and Jamaica. Of the Poles – four times the Diamond League was won by discus athlete Piotr Malachowski, currently sports director of the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial.
Diamond League 2023
The Diamond League competition will be held on July 16, 2023 at the Silesian Stadium. The Diamond League in Chorzow will be one of the more important stops on the athletics road to the World Championships in August. In 2022, the General Assembly of the Diamond League at a meeting in Rome decided to include the Silesia Memorial of Kamila Skolimowska permanently in the series. The most prestigious series of Diamond League athletics meetings will be held in Silesia for at least the next five years.
